Rene is a Director of Photography who, with each of his projects, attempts to present something visually unprecedented, if only subtly. For him, his role on set parallels his devotion to photography itself—in both realms he is committed to exploring and challenging the technical and conceptual limitations at hand. Rene is especially known for his mastery of natural lighting; he maximizes the effects of windows and practicals in order to embellish and augment his scenes’ meanings.
Rene has worked as Director of Photography on some great projects -both feature films and television in various budget ranges. Earlier this year he lensed the film adaptation of the beloved children’s story, written by author Mary Downing Hahn, WAIT TILL HELEN COMES, directed by Dominic James, and produced by Caramel Films. Prior to that he shot the feature film FORSAKEN with director Jon Cassar, starring Donald and Kiefer Sutherland and Demi Moore, which will have its world premiere as part of the 2015 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival. Rene has also shot multiple seasons of the popular Warner Bros./CW television series NIKITA, starring Maggie Q and Shane West, which garnered him a CSC nomination for Best TV Series Cinematography. As well as shooting the feature film FACES IN THE CROWD starring Milla Jovovich and Julian McMahon, with director Julien Magnat and the feature films THEY and HIGHWAYMEN for Miramax and New Line, respectively.
His work on the Jerry Bruckheimer science/ investigation series, THE ELEVENTH HOUR for Warner Bros Television received a CSC nomination for Best TV Series Cinematography. He shot five episodes of the captivating and thrilling series KIDNAPPED for NBC and the CBS TV films JESSE STONE: SEA CHANGE and THIN ICE, starring Tom Selleck, for which he received ASC and CSC nominations for Best TV Drama Cinematography. Rene has also won an ASC Award for THE CROSSING and a CSC Award for Stone Cold.
Rene also photographed pilots for the well-known shows PARTY OF FIVE, EARLY EDITION and ALMOST GROWN, along with 14 episodes of THE WONDER YEARS.
Rene has consistently been recognized with awards, earning an ASC Award along with three nominations, 11 Gemini Awards of 13 nominations, as well as 11 CSC Awards and 14 additional nominations.
Rene is a member of the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers.
