In the words of Ray Dumas, “It is an exciting time to be a cinematographer.” The possibilities afforded by rapidly advancing technologies are seemingly endless, and Ray is keen to open new doors of creativity with each additional development. Owing to the spirit of music videos, which were ubiquitous during his formative years, Ray will always find inspiration in pursuing the beauty and experimentation of cinematography. He specializes in using dynamic camera movement to powerfully alter audiences’ experiences of scenes, sometimes with the subtlest of movements.
Ray is a leader in the commercial and music video worlds. He recently shot the short film MENAKA with director Arev Manoukian for the NFB. He also shot the feature film YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE with director Yannick Saillet for Babe Films. His other feature, I DECLARE WAR, with director Jason Lapeyre, produced by Samaritan Entertainment, premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Ray has also shot the docu-dramas REAL VAMPIRE, MAYDAY, CHRISTIANITY DECODED and THE REAL JACK THE RIPPER, with the latter garnering him a CSC nomination for Best Docudrama Cinematography.
His short films include THE LOST DREAM, EASTER and THE CELLO, which earned him a CSC Award for Best Short Film Cinematography.
His steadicam background provides a unique and cinematic approach to his work. Eventually, Ray dreams of shooting in outer space, where the lighting is fantastic and his enormous equipment is as light as a feather. Richard Branson: if you happen to be reading this, Ray Dumas is ready at the drop of a dime to shoot your first Galactic spot.
