James Gardner Cinematographer

James Gardner relishes in every opportunity to absorb a project’s vision and harness his photographic talent to make it a reality. It’s this contagious energy behind a project that inspires his work. Born and raised in Durban, South Africa, James has collaborated with some of the premier film talents in the world, allowing him to build a rich pool of experience from which he can draw for each new shoot. While some of his acclaimed work is described below, his dream project is to make a film exploring the mental, political and racial forces central to the game of cricket.

James has worked on a variety of projects ranging from feature films such as SAINT ROZ starring Rachel Wilson, which was the Gold Remi Award Winner at the Worldfest Independent International Film Festival. He also lensed the classic FAR FROM HOME: THE ADVENTURES OF YELLOW DOG, which was particularly dear to his heart because of the awe-inspiring locations he was privileged enough to capture.

James also shot the TV movie, HUSTLE: THE PETE ROSE STORY for ESPN, as well as a number of docu-dramas for both Discovery and BBC.

In the documentary world, he shot the beautiful documentary SAVING THE MUSTANG: AMERICA’S HORSE ON THE BRINK with Stornoway Productions.

He has extensive experience shooting on both film and HD.  His remarkable commercial credits include thousands of commercials that encompass a wide range of styles and brands including BMW, MCDONALDS, KRAFT and SUBARU.

James lives happily with his wife, two teenagers, and their domestic pack of dogs ranging from a Cairn terrier to a Rottweiler.
